Learning on the Land - a new "School Farm" initiative

Children at Tablehurst

Tablehurst Farm is developing plans for a residential centre for schools that will give groups of children a unique opportunity to experience life on a working farm. The centre will be aimed principally at children growing up in urban and deprived areas, many of whom have few opportunities to connect with life in rural parts of the country. Local schools will have the opportunity to participate in an on-going programme of educational visits.

The Learning on the Land centre will offer a five day programme for up to 30 childrenThe school farm building and four accompanying adults, although shorter and day visits will be also be available. Tablehurst is a thriving 500 acre organic farm and visiting children will get a genuine, hands-on experience of farming.

Visiting children will work in teams on the following activities: pig feeding, harvesting vegetables for the day's meals, cooking, milking the cows, cutting wood, working with sheep, collecting eggs, ploughing, sowing and threshing wheat, milling wheat for flour and baking bread with it, making butter, country crafts, games and team building activities.

Our location in East Sussex makes it ideal for visiting schools from London, Brighton, Worthing and other cities in the South East. We believe this initiative will be welcomed by schools as a way of implementing a range of government education policies, including: Healthy Eating, Growing Schools, Every Child Matters, and the year of Food and Farming.

Tablehurst Farm is looking for funding to start up this not-for-profit venture. A detailed budget and business plan will be available in January 2008.
